Relume is a boutique clothing store located in the heart of the Shibuya shopping area in Tokyo, Japan. Crème was inspired by the mid-century architecture of southern inland California for this design, where the indoor and outdoor spaces are merged by large center pivot doors. The main indoor retail area takes inspiration from warehouse spaces, featuring open industrial shop lights and clothing displays constructed with blackened steel and mesh. The light concrete screens, use of brick, flagstone and succulent plants recall the tradition of contemporary California architecture. The pop up space at the front features hand knitted macramé screens and displays made with Ipe and white oak, elements which help recall a desert California ambiance. The exterior has an open trellis and converted stairs that function as platforms for seating and greenery.
