Helsinki Museum Proposal, Helsinki, Finland

Status

Competition, 2014

Location

Helsinki, Finland

Area

430,500 square feet

Scope
Architecture

Crème’s museum proposal challenges the current state of the “art museum” by weaving together interior and exterior galleries, flexible public plazas and community spaces. By pulling together these different elements an “art environment” is created, as opposed to an art museum, connecting the city center with an outdoor park to be enjoyed by both tourists and residents. The plan and construction, modular and sustainable, pays homage to the traditional Finnish architecture of the log house. While the methods of construction may be modern, the reverence for traditional craft can be found in the keyed, interlocking joinery of each space. The museum blurs the line between the past and the future as it does the public and private worlds.
